Active Australian retail investors reach 11.5 million

Retail investor participation outside super and property has reached record levels. Wealth managers and advisers have a major opportunity to support the next wave of diverse, prospective investors.

What happened

The ASX Australian Investor Study 2026 recorded 11.5 million active Australian investors holding assets outside their primary residence and superannuation, representing a 28% increase since 2020. The study revealed expanding demographic diversity, noting that women account for 61% of intending investors, while younger Australians make up nearly 40% of those planning to invest.

Why it matters here

Expanding direct retail investment builds financial security across broader Australian demographics. However, with nearly 10 million Australians still uninvested outside home equity and super, limited financial literacy and poor access to affordable advice remain significant obstacles. Addressing these knowledge gaps will be vital to converting prospective interest into active participation.

What to watch

Industry submissions on financial advice reform and digital advice tools targeted at assisting the 950,000 Australians planning to start investing within 12 months.
