APRA figures highlight severe Australian retirement savings shortfall

Official data reveals average superannuation balances sit far below industry benchmarks for comfortable living. Super fund members approaching age 50 should assess voluntary contributions and growth strategies before entering their final pre-retirement decades.

What happened

Data from the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority shows Australians aged 50 to 54 hold an average superannuation balance of $198,000, while those aged 70 to 74 average $312,000. Meanwhile, the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia estimates a comfortable retirement requires $630,000 for a single homeowner and $730,000 for a retired couple.

Why it matters here

The gap between actual average balances and recommended benchmarks means many Australians risk relying heavily on the Age Pension or reducing post-retirement spending. For investors in their 50s, peak earning years provide a key window to make extra salary-sacrifice or non-concessional contributions to compound investment returns before age 67.

What to watch

ASFA quarterly updates and superannuation contribution cap limits for the 2026–27 financial year to guide voluntary top-up planning.
