What happened
Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed Australian household spending was flat in August following growth of 1.1 per cent in July and 0.9 per cent in June. On an annual basis, spending was 6.8 per cent higher compared to August last year. Spending on recreation and culture dropped 1.4 per cent after previous strength driven by major sporting events.
Why it matters here
Flat household spending confirms that monetary policy tightening is working to constrain discretionary consumption. For investors, softening consumer demand signals potential revenue headwinds for retail, media, and discretionary goods stocks, while reinforcing the Reserve Bank's objective to slow domestic economic activity to bring inflation back to target.
What to watch
Upcoming ABS retail trade figures and third-quarter GDP consumption data to assess whether household spending remains sluggish or contracts further into year-end.
