Australian interbank futures price cash rate towards five percent

Australian cash rates are projected to reach the highest peak in the Western developed world. Investors should review debt obligations, stress-test interest coverage, and consider defensive positioning across fixed income.

What happened

ANZ Research reported that interbank futures now price Australia's official cash rate to rise from its current 4.35% level to a peak of 4.99% by mid-2027. This forecast means Australian borrowers face the highest projected interest rates among major Western economies, exceeding cash rate benchmarks in New Zealand, the eurozone, and the UK.

Why it matters here

Higher interest rates for an extended period increase debt servicing costs for Australian households and listed companies. Elevated borrowing costs put downward pressure on consumer discretionary spending and property valuations while increasing credit risks across commercial banking portfolios.

What to watch

Monitor the Reserve Bank of Australia's upcoming cash rate announcement on 29 September for further guidance on official policy settings.
