Government forecasts commodity prices peaking in FY27

Australian mining revenues may face headwinds as official forecasts project major commodity prices will peak in FY27 before steadily drifting lower across the five-year outlook horizon.

What happened

The Federal Department of Industry, Science and Resources published its latest quarterly report, forecasting that commodity prices will peak during 2026–27 and subsequently drift lower. The projection follows a strong period of returns for ASX resource stocks driven by lithium, silver and gold price gains.

Why it matters here

ASX materials and metals sectors delivered massive total returns in FY26 due to surging commodity valuations. A medium-term price decline could compress earnings margins, cash flow and dividend payouts for major Australian resource producers over the coming financial years.

What to watch

Global industrial production trends, electric vehicle adoption rates, artificial intelligence infrastructure demand, and critical mineral supply growth as the FY27 peak approaches.
