Proposed CGT changes threaten junior mining exploration funding

Proposed shifts in capital gains tax settings could reduce retail funding for high-risk mineral exploration, restricting the long-term project pipeline for Australian resources companies.

What happened

Genesis Minerals executive chair Raleigh Finlayson warned at the Melbourne Mining Club that proposed federal changes to capital gains tax will disincentivize retail investors from funding junior gold and mineral explorers. He highlighted that reducing the 50 per cent CGT discount caps upside potential for risk-tolerant investors.

Why it matters here

Junior exploration companies rely heavily on direct equity capital from mum-and-dad retail investors rather than institutional funds. If tax policy changes alter the risk-reward ratio, discovery pipelines across key commodities could shrink, ultimately impairing future acquisition targets for mid-tier and major miners.

What to watch

Federal Parliament debate timelines and Treasury consultation papers regarding proposed capital gains tax amendments.
