What happened
The Reserve Bank of Australia released its half-yearly Financial Stability Review following its cash rate increase to 4.6 per cent. The central bank estimated that less than 2 per cent of variable-rate owner-occupier mortgage borrowers experience a cash flow shortfall where income fails to cover essential living costs and repayments. Furthermore, less than 1 per cent of borrowers currently sit in negative equity.
Why it matters here
Despite a domestic housing downturn, the RBA views household financial stress as contained because the median borrower holds over a year of scheduled repayments in offset and redraw accounts. However, the RBA highlighted greater systemic risks stemming from overseas, specifically opaque debt financing surrounding the global artificial intelligence boom and spikes in sovereign bond yields.
What to watch
The Reserve Bank Monetary Policy Board announces its next interest rate decision on November 3, alongside updated household credit quality data.
