What happened
The Reserve Bank of Australia kept the cash rate target unchanged at 4.35% at its August meeting, following three rate increases earlier in the year. The central bank highlighted that inflation remains elevated due to domestic cost pressures and Middle East energy risks. The RBA does not expect inflation to return to the 2% to 3% target midpoint until early 2028.
Why it matters here
Prolonged restrictive monetary policy keeps borrowing costs elevated for households and businesses, dampening consumer discretionary spending and property transactions. For fixed income and equity investors, a delayed rate-cutting timeline means defensive yield assets remain competitive, while highly leveraged corporate borrowers face ongoing debt servicing pressures across their balance sheets.
What to watch
The next RBA Board monetary policy decision scheduled for 29 September 2026, along with quarterly CPI inflation prints and monthly national unemployment figures.
