Retail Trading Surges Across Local Crypto Markets

Australian retail investors are increasingly incorporating digital assets alongside shares and ETFs. Rising transaction counts and weekend trading reflect evolving portfolio management habits among younger investors.

What happened

Data from local platform CMC Invest shows client numbers trading crypto rose 87% year-on-year, with total crypto trade counts jumping 89%. Bitcoin trade volumes rose 104% while Ethereum increased 107%. Bitcoin became the seventh most-traded instrument on the platform excluding ETFs, outranking Nvidia, Commonwealth Bank, and Tesla, with weekend trade shares expanding by 13% to 16%.

Why it matters here

The expansion of 24/7 trading habits reflects a broader change in retail capital deployment across Australia. As younger investors diversify beyond property into liquid markets, demand for integrated trading platforms and multi-asset management tools continues to reshape the domestic retail financial services sector.

What to watch

Retail capital flows in upcoming quarterly broker updates and potential regulatory announcements regarding domestic digital asset trading infrastructure.
