Shanxi Shutdowns to Restrain Coking Coal Supply

Extended mine closures in Shanxi Province are expected to keep Chinese coking coal import demand strong into 2027, supporting pricing fundamentals for Australian metallurgical coal exporters.

What happened

Bloomberg Intelligence reports that the coking coal supply shock from May's fatal Shanxi mine accident will persist into 1H27. A mid-September survey found 75 coking coal mines remained closed across Shanxi, removing nearly 73 million tonnes of annual capacity. Chinese imports reached 13.1 million tonnes in August, up 29% year-on-year, with Australian shipments helping bridge the deficit.

Why it matters here

Metallurgical coal is a vital revenue generator for Australian mining majors and regional exporters. Prolonged domestic production bottlenecks in China provide a floor under international coking coal demand and pricing, supporting free cash flow and dividend generation across ASX resource stocks exposed to steelmaking raw materials.
