Treasury Moves to Enforce Mainstream Crypto Tax Reporting

Australian crypto investors face increased transparency as the Treasury prepares rules requiring digital asset platforms to report transaction data directly to the ATO and international tax authorities.

What happened

The Australian Treasury released an exposure draft for the Treasury Laws Amendment Bill 2026: Tax Information Reporting. The proposed laws create an international cooperative reporting framework enabling Australia to adopt the OECD's Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework, expanding ATO visibility over domestic and cross-border digital asset transactions.

Why it matters here

Combined with ASIC's licensing proposals under Consultation Paper 392, the regulatory environment for digital assets is transitioning from self-reporting to mandatory automated data sharing. Crypto investors will face reduced anonymity, stricter record-keeping obligations, and formal tax compliance enforcement across local and international exchanges.

What to watch

The closing date for Treasury public submissions on the exposure draft and the subsequent introduction of final legislation into the Australian federal parliament.
