Western Australia resource base mapped at 8.1 trillion dollars

Long-term mining investment in Western Australia remains underpinned by massive iron ore and critical mineral reserves, reinforcing the structural importance of resource heavyweights in Australian equity portfolios.

What happened

Modelling by EY-Parthenon for the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia estimated that the state's identified mineral and energy resources could generate A$8.1 trillion in saleable product value. Under a central scenario assuming 80 per cent development, the sector would support A$1.9 trillion in economic activity and A$401 billion in capital investment.

Why it matters here

Bulk commodities dominate the state's resource valuation, led by iron ore at A$5.53 trillion, natural gas at A$738 billion, lithium at A$526 billion, and gold at A$474 billion. This massive resource pipeline provides multi-decade cash flow visibility for major ASX miners and underpins federal corporate tax receipts.

What to watch

Capital expenditure updates, project development approvals, and strategic production milestone announcements from major ASX-listed resource producers operating in Western Australia through 2026.
