Younger Australians expect mortgage debt into retirement

Superannuation balances may increasingly be diverted toward clearing primary home loans rather than generating ongoing retirement income, altering traditional wealth strategies for younger Australian demographics.

What happened

A Vanguard survey revealed 48% of Gen Z and 37% of Millennials expect to carry home loan debt into retirement, compared to under a quarter of older generations. Among those expecting housing debt, 39% plan to clear their mortgage via a lump-sum superannuation withdrawal, while younger respondents estimated needing over $90,000 annually to live comfortably.

Why it matters here

Carrying housing debt into retirement reduces net disposable income for retirees and places structural pressure on super funds to maintain liquidity for lump-sum payouts. Australian investors must balance accumulating sufficient super for lifetime living costs against long-term property debt repayment schedules.

What to watch

Watch for upcoming industry policy submissions and regulatory guidance on how superannuation drawdowns and housing affordability measures interact over coming financial years.
