Younger Australians lead record surge in self managed super

Younger Australians are increasingly taking direct control of their retirement savings via SMSFs. Investors establishing self-managed funds must balance added investment control against ongoing compliance obligations and administration costs.

What happened

Figures from the Australian Taxation Office show self-managed superannuation funds now hold over $1.1 trillion in total assets following record establishments. Australians aged 35 to 44 accounted for more than 39 per cent of new SMSF entrants in the June 2026 quarter, establishing over 12,000 new funds in three months. Over $47 billion transferred into SMSFs from APRA funds over four years.

Why it matters here

The migration of mid-career Australians towards SMSFs signals a structural shift in how local investors approach retirement wealth, favouring direct control and asset selection. For traditional industry and retail super funds, this outflow creates liquidity considerations, while for younger SMSF trustees, it places full responsibility for portfolio construction, risk management, and regulatory compliance on their own shoulders.
