ASIC consults on new crypto exchange standards

Stricter regulation for Australian crypto trading platforms from 2027 will increase investor protection and operational safeguards, requiring platforms to separate client funds and adhere to strict licensing.

What happened

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission opened public consultations on draft standards for digital asset platforms and tokenised custody providers following the passage of the Corporations Amendment (Digital Assets Framework) Act 2026. The regulations, taking effect 9 April 2027, introduce strict rules covering capital requirements, asset custody, and trading execution.

Why it matters here

Local crypto investors will gain greater statutory protection under Australia's financial services licensing system. The framework prohibits platforms from trading against their own users and enforces audit and capital standards, potentially raising compliance costs for smaller operators while encouraging institutional participation.

What to watch

ASIC's release of final digital asset standards and guidance during the first quarter of 2027.
