What happened
The Australian Securities and Investments Commission proposed operational standards for digital asset platforms set to take effect on 8 April 2027. Under the framework, platforms without qualifying third-party custody must hold at least A$14 million in net tangible assets or 10% of average revenue. Over 140 entities have submitted Australian Financial Services Licence applications. Existing platforms have until October 2027 to comply.
Why it matters here
The introduction of capital reserves, client record-keeping requirements, and prohibitions on platforms trading against their own users aims to mitigate exchange insolvency risks. While institutional infrastructure will improve consumer confidence, high capital hurdles will likely eliminate smaller local brokers, reducing platform choice for domestic crypto traders and pushing market share toward larger, heavily capitalized entities.
What to watch
Industry submissions on ASIC Consultation Paper 392 during the public feedback period and the regulator's planned publication of finalized digital asset operational standards in early 2027.
