What happened
Bloomberg Intelligence reported that Chinese coking coal supply disruptions following May's fatal Shanxi mine accident will persist into 2027. While August imports fell 4% month-on-month to 13.1 million tonnes, they remained 29% higher year-on-year. A mid-September survey revealed 75 coking coal mines representing nearly 73 million tonnes of annual capacity remain shuttered in Shanxi, with full normalization delayed until the first half of 2027.
Why it matters here
Prolonged Chinese domestic production cuts mean seaborne coking coal demand will stay elevated. For Australian mining companies and resource investors, sustained import requirements from China provide price support for metallurgical coal exports, offsetting broader concerns around slowing Chinese steel consumption and global industrial activity over the medium term.
