Escalating freight costs keep global oil prices elevated

Rising maritime transport costs and geopolitical friction continue to keep energy prices high, presenting ongoing cost-push inflation risks for Australian consumers and businesses.

What happened

Brent crude oil traded around US$104 a barrel as severe freight constraints and transit delays through the Strait of Hormuz pushed shipping costs up to US$30 a barrel. To ease global diesel shortages, G7 nations announced a release of 100 million barrels from emergency reserves over four months, though tight tanker availability continues to disrupt refining operations.

Why it matters here

Sustained high crude oil prices and record freight premiums feed directly into Australian fuel pump prices and supply chain costs. Higher transport expenses squeeze corporate margins across transport, retail, and manufacturing sectors while keeping headline inflation sticky, increasing the likelihood of tight Reserve Bank monetary policy.

What to watch

Weekly US crude and distillate inventory reports, official G7 emergency release schedules, and national retail petrol price movements ahead of the upcoming September quarter inflation report.
