Iron ore prices ease on rising global supply

Expanding global iron ore shipments and slowing industrial metal demand are capping commodity prices. Australian iron ore major revenues face headwinds if increased supply keeps prices under pressure.

What happened

Iron ore futures retreated toward CNY 710 per tonne in early September after global shipments increased by 2.73 million tonnes week-on-week to 35.72 million tonnes. Research firm BMI forecasted that global iron ore production growth will accelerate to an average of 2.2 per cent per year between 2026 and 2030, raising output to 3.04 billion tonnes.

Why it matters here

Iron ore remains Australia's single largest export earner and a primary earnings driver for major ASX miners like BHP, Rio Tinto, and Fortescue. Surging oil prices and higher interest rates globally threaten to curb industrial growth, dampening demand for steelmaking raw materials.

What to watch

Chinese steel mill blast furnace operating rates and weekly port arrival data during the key September peak construction season across major industrial hubs in China.
